10 Dumb California Laws

Just because a law is dumb doesn’t mean you don’t need a quality defense attorney

10 Dumb California LawsMany dumb laws exist across the country, and California certainly has its share. Some laws are dumb because they’re outdated, while others are poorly written or downright unenforceable. Here’s a sampling of 10 of California’s dumbest laws.

It is unlawful to allow a dog to pursue a bear or bobcat at any time. Really? This law was ostensibly written to prevent hunting with the aid of dogs. However, apparently anyone with a disobedient dog could be guilty of a criminal act!

In Baldwin Park, CA, it is illegal to ride a bicycle in a swimming pool. Presumably the swimming pool was empty at the time?

No dog shall be in a public place without its master on a leash. This is the actual text of a City Council order in Belvedere CA. We’ve long suspected that humans were the ones being controlled by their dogs, and not the other way around. This confirms it!

It is illegal to herd animals down the street in Chico CA. Herds of cattle, horses, mules, hogs, sheep, and goats are few and far between these days in Chico, but still, good to know.

Detonating a nuclear device in city limits results in a $500 fine. Never mind that many other, more important laws would be violated before you get to this point…

Growing vegetables in any public street is illegal in Chico CA. This law was written with an eye to keeping enterprising farmers from plowing up dirt roads and cultivating the land. Today you’d need a jackhammer, not a plow.
Ducks have the right of way on Rancho California Street in Temecula CA. We bet this traffic law wasn’t covered on the DMV exam!

Children’s Halloween costumes must be approved by the Sheriff. Talk about unintended consequences! This absurdity stems from a Walnut CA law making it illegal to wear masks or disguises on public streets without a permit from the Sheriff.

Stores must get a permit to host a “going out of business sale” in Thousand Oaks CA. Well, it is a lame marketing ploy but do we really need a law about it?

You must scoop the poop within 7 days of a dog doing his business in Cerritos CA. And who is keeping track of this, exactly?
