Fullerton Math Teacher Accused of Sexual Assault

Sex crimes accusations and convictions can both have a serious negative impact

math teacherEarlier this month a junior high school teacher pled not guilty to charges of lewd acts and distributing pornography to minors. If she really is innocent, let’s hope she has an excellent defense attorney, because a conviction for sex crimes will almost certainly destroy her career and her life.

The teacher, 28-year-old Melissa Nicole Lindgren of La Mirada CA, allegedly engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior with three junior high students ages 13 to 15 during the 2012-2013 school year. Lindgren reportedly sent inappropriate texts and phone messages to the boys and then molested two of them at school and one of them in a car.

Lindgren is currently facing felony charges for five counts of lewd acts on a child, two counts of lewd acts on a child under 14, and three counts of distributing pornography to minors. A sentencing enhancement for lewd acts on multiple children could apply if she is convicted, and she could spend over 16 years in prison.

While we should be grateful that sex crimes, particularly crimes against minors, are taken very seriously in this country, at the same time it is unfortunate that even unfounded allegations can cast a shadow on an individual’s reputation for the rest of their lives. In cases where individuals accused of sex crimes against minors work in trusted positions such as teachers, coaches, and administrators, the damage is especially dramatic.

In Lindgren’s case, it is impossible to say whether she is in fact innocent without examining any of the evidence. In any case, in order to have any hope of success in securing a positive outcome to her case, she will need an excellent sex crimes defense attorney.
