Recent DUI Numbers Show That Drunk Driving Continues to Be a Problem in California

The COVID-19 global health crisis has caused tremendous pain and suffering worldwide — hundreds of thousands of death, millions ill, and economic devastation. At the same time, it has led to some upsides, like reduced traffic and pollution with so many people working from home. Another potential upside was that people were less likely to drink and drive since there are fewer places to go during the pandemic.

Unfortunately, recent numbers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) show that this benefit may not have taken place. Over the Fourth of July weekend, an operation by the CHP known as the “Independence Day Maximum Enforcement Period” resulted in 738 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (DUI). At least 36 people were killed during this 54 hour holiday enforcement period.

In theory, there should be a low number of DUI arrests because restaurants and bars are closed for in-person dining and drinking. However, individuals can still buy alcohol to-go or purchase beer, wine, and liquor for consumption at home. Parties and gatherings — or simply people drinking at home — may have contributed to this high number of arrests.

If you choose to drink or use drugs — during the pandemic or at any time — the best course of action is to get a ride or to stay where you are. Driving under the influence is a major cause of motor vehicle accidents, including those that lead to serious or fatal injuries. In addition, if you are arrested for a DUI, you may face significant penalties, including jail time, probation, large fines and fees, mandatory alcohol education courses, and a lengthy license suspension.

The smart move — and the one that a DUI defense lawyer in San Bernardino, CA would recommend — is to never get behind the wheel of the car if you have been drinking or consumed any drugs (including prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs that could affect your ability to drive). But if you are arrested for a California DUI, there are a number of ways that you can fight back against the charges. A skilled attorney will thoroughly evaluate your case to develop factual and legal defenses to the charges against you.
