What’s a “Sober Living Home”? Is it like Rehab? If you’ve been convicted of a DUI, the judge may require you to live in a sober living home for a certain amount of time as part of your sentence. Often, people choose to live in one after rehab as a way to smoothly transition back to their normal lives. Many people have never heard of a sober living home, and many wonder what living at one is like. Here’s some helpful information to get you started as you think about your upcoming stay.

What is a sober living home?

A sober living home is another name for a halfway house. It’s an environment that supports the recovery of newly sober people. Many people enter sober living homes after completing inpatient treatment for alcoholism and/or drug addiction, or while enrolled in an outpatient treatment program. Most sober living homes require that residents be completely alcohol and drug-free and follow certain house rules at all times. Many sober living homes include 12-step programs, though not all.

A sober living home can be thought of as a bridge between rehab programs and the temptations that inherently exist in each former addict’s normal routine.

Paying for a sober living home

Some sober living homes take insurance, and some insurance policies cover it. When preparing to go to a sober living home, you should speak with a representative from your insurance company and the sober living home about your payment options.

Sober living homes rules often allow people to come and go during the day, so you can always work to cover the costs of living in one. Often, payment plans can be negotiated with the sober living home manager, and scholarships may be available to you. You could also apply for a bank loan or personal loan from a family member or friend to cover the costs while you recover from addiction.
