61 Federal Drug Offenders Get a Second Chance at Life after President Obama Pardons ThemThis Wednesday, President Obama wrote letters to 61 inmates, granting them clemency from harsh prison sentences, according to this Christian Science Monitor article. All of the offenders were given long prison sentences for drug possession or intent to sell, and everyone has already served at least ten years of their prison sentences. The majority of those given clemency have only committed non-violent crimes, though a few have firearm charges.

52 of these inmates will likely be released on July 28, and the rest will be released either September 26 or March 30. They’re from 24 states, with over a third imprisoned in Florida, Texas, and Illinois. Eleven inmates will be released in Florida, and five will be released from both Texas and Illinois.

This grant of clemency is a historical event because President Obama has now pardoned 248 inmates – that’s more than the past six presidents combined. Plus White House staff have suggested that more pardons may occur before the end of this presidency.

“Clemency of individual cases alone cannot fix decades of overly punitive sentencing policies. So while we continue to work to resolve as many clemency applications as possible – and make no mistake, we are working hard at this – only broader criminal justice reform can truly bring justice to the many thousands of people behind bars serving unduly harsh and outdated sentences,” wrote White House Counsel Neil Eggleston in a press release about President Obama’s pardons.

Here at the Chambers Law Firm, we couldn’t agree more with Mr. Eggleston’s sentiment, which likely echoes President Obama’s stance on criminal justice reform as well. The federal and state criminal justice systems often deal out overly harsh sentences for even nonviolent crimes, which is why Attorney Chambers and his entire staff work tirelessly, day-in and day-out, to defend people from harsh sentences and wrongful convictions throughout Southern California.
